Stories

I enjoy creative writing. Here's most of what I've written.

Fanfiction

By word count, most of what I've written has been fanfiction - stories using some or all of the setting and characters from an existing work. It's an easier place to start, for a lot of writers; there's less work to do before you get to whichever bits of the process you find fun, and it's far, far easier to find an audience and get feedback for fanfiction than by trying to show off wholesale original writing on the internet.

At the same time, fitting in with existing material has its own challenges - making sure characters still feel familiar, working inside the rules of the setting, and so on.

The Making [Worm]

I thought I could pass for a real dog up until I met one.

The Making follows the story of what is not quite a dog, escaped from her destroyed fever-dream home and trying very hard to fit into human society. You can read it on the Spacebattles forums here.

The Making is fanfiction using supporting characters and setting from Worm, a web serial novel about a teenage girl with a superpower on an Earth that, due to superpowers, has been going downhill since the 80s.

A Barber's Warning [Worm/Cultist Simulator]

Moth is the wild and perilous principle of chaos and yearning.

In A Barber's Warning, we follow Taylor's descent into the secrets behind and below the waking world, and the alien gods therein. You can read it on the Spacebattles forums here.

A Barber's Warning is fanfiction fusing characters and setting from Worm and from Cultist Simulator, a 'game of apocalypse and yearning' that is so vulnerable to spoilers I won't describe it any further.

Search History [Worm]

Being a hero is complicated, it turns out, and Taylor doesn't have anyone to answer her questions.

Search History follows the journey of an alternate Taylor with slightly different circumstances and a different superpower - and does so largely through her internet search history. You can read it on the Spacebattles forums here.

Search History is fanfiction that leverages the reader's familiarity with characters and setting from Worm.

Snippets

I've published a few more fragmentary bits and pieces on the Spacebattles forums - still mostly fanfiction; the seeds of ideas that might grow into larger stories.
